Review: Ready for Wild by Liora Blake

The Faerie Queen’s review Nothing like a book to expand your mind past the stereotypes and beliefs you had for another kind of life. That’s one of my favourite things about reading: exploring other people’s lives and trying out new ways of thinking. And that’s what happened in this book. Much like Braden had to face his contempt for TV shows featuring hunting, I had to face my issues with hunting itself. I mean, Bambi, guys. Luckily, this book was written in such a way that I was hooked on the characters and their attraction, enough to distract me from the fact that they enjoyed killing things. But more than that, it showed me that while there are idiots who go around doing it irresponsibly, there are people who go hunting for the challenge, and who don’t do it just to hang up trophies but actually use the animal for […]

Review: 69 Million Things I Hate About You by Kira Archer

Review: 69 Million Things I Hate About You by Kira Archer

The Faerie Queen’s review If you want pure fluff, ok, you can read this. I mean, I did sort of enjoy the book. But I couldn’t help thinking while reading that there were a lot of other, better books. This was so formulaic and lazy that I’m sure I could have gotten the same romance kick and more elsewhere. Let’s start with the easiest thing. This book was rushed. Yeah, you could say it was a “quick read”, but really, it just wasn’t very developed. Right from the beginning, I felt like only the bare minimum was thrown in to get the plot going. No time was taken to really let us know who the various characters were, what their lives were like, etc. But hey, I very quickly learned about Bossman Cole… Without any scene-setting, the book started with Cole’s assistant quitting because he wouldn’t let her take the weekend off to […]

Review: Breathless by Leigh LaValle

The Faerie Queen’s review My my my. That was sexy. I mean, there was plot and character development and all that, but wooow was the chemistry amazing. Leigh kept me wanting more between the characters while giving up a teeny bit of heat here and there so I could never relax. I craved more and more, so I was definitely on the same page as Jake and Hannah. I really liked both characters. Jake was completely swoonworthy, and I loved how he had this rawness to him and could be both assertive as well as respecting Hannah and getting explicit consent. Hannah was super relatable in that while she was a yoga instructor, she defied the stereotype, loving junk food and soda. I could also relate to her need to maintain control over herself and her life. I have the same struggles, especially since my last relationship ended. Also, can I […]

Guest Post: Shani Petroff, author My New Crush Gave to Me, on why she writes romance

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Shani Petroff, author of My New Crush Gave to Me! Today, Shani will be talking about writing romance. You can also find out more about her book and enter a giveaway at the end! Why I write romance I love reading and writing all sorts of books, but I have a special place in my heart for romantic comedies. For me, they are the perfect escape – a chance to momentarily put aside any stress or problems going on in the “real” world. For several hours you can lose yourself in the exploits of the leading character, who undoubtedly gets herself into amusing and cringe-tastic situations. While she experiences highs and lows and moments of failure and disappointment—at the end, there’s always a happily ever after. It’s the type of book that leaves a smile on my face. With a good portion […]

Review & Excerpt: Nailed It by Cindi Madsen

The Faerie Queen’s review When I signed up for this tour, I didn’t realise at the time that this was a follow-up to 12 Steps to Mr. Right, one of the first books I reviewed on Love in a time of Feminism. If it had dawned on me then, I would have been even more eager to get started, as I knew while reading Savannah and Linc’s story that there was a little something something going on between Savannah’s brother and best friend. I remember hoping there would be a sequel featuring them, and voila. Cindi Madsen delivered. The chemistry was delicious in this. Home renovation lent itself to numerous innuendos, and Cindi took full advantage. There were plenty of sexy scenes, as well as just funny, banterous ones. (Is that a word?) And while Ivy was battling with her inner relationship demons, Jackson was so sure and stable and wonderful. He gave her […]

Guest Post & Excerpt: Mara Gan, author of Joined, on her writing routine

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Mara Gan, author of Joined! Today, Mara will be talking about her writing routine. You can also find out more about her book and enter a giveaway at the end! Mara Gan’s writing routine I have a full-time job apart from writing, so I tend to daydream a lot of my stories for a while before I get around to writing them down. But when I write, either for my job or for my life as an author, I make myself a cup of green tea, read a little bit of news on my laptop, and turn on Netflix. I often stray toward Friends or Star Trek: The Next Generation, because I know all the episodes so well that it doesn’t distract me into paying rapt attention, but I like having a little bit of conversation noise in the background. For whatever […]

Review: Necessary Roughness by Julie Brannagh

Review: Necessary Roughness by Julie Brannagh

The Faerie Queen’s review After an ok start, this book slowly but surely got worse and worse. The only reason I kept going is because someone said the ending was ok. While the main characters – Jordan and Tanner – were fine, the secondary characters, particularly the women, were a joke. They all seemed to be caricatures: either they were ditzy, or they were ditzy AND cruel. Tanner’s first live-in nurse showed up for a couple of scenes, only to decide to sexually harass him out of nowhere, and this was somehow connected to the ex-girlfriend who dumped him but then kept sending him sexts. It was like all the women had to be nightmares to make Jordan look like the only option. The relationship between Jordan and Tanner also didn’t make sense. They claimed to hate each other, but there wasn’t enough showing of this. If anything, maybe they […]

Review: The Cowboy’s Rebellious Bride by Laurie LeClair

The Faerie Queen’s review This wasn’t a bad book. But it wasn’t a good book either. It was just, on average, a meh book. The plot was a bit of a disaster. People thrown in here and there for the sake of drama without it really making sense for the story. Like Tabitha, Cody’s ex, suddenly showing up out of nowhere, HOURS after a run-in with another ex. And all out of town. What really are the chances of that happening??? Characters also behaved in strange ways, like Hannah’s weird leap of logic towards the end. The plot didn’t flow, and there’s no way around that. The book also seemed really preachy. The most bizarre characters, the Fruit Spinsters (they’re called Clementine and Peach), tried to protect Hannah’s honour by not letting her see Cody alone before the wedding (um, I’m sure Hannah wasn’t a virgin given her previous forays). […]

Playlist & Excerpt: Meeting His Match by Shannyn Schroeder

It’s two for the price of one today! I’ve got a playlist AND an excerpt from Meeting His Match by Shannyn Schroeder! About the book Playlist For every book I write, I create a playlist before I sit down to compose a single word. I listen to the music all the time—in the house, in the car—because it’s my way of keeping the story moving in my head. I use it to connect with my characters – at least who I think they’ll be once I start writing. Here’s the playlist for Meeting His Match. Put Your Hands on Me – Joss Stone After You – Meg Myers Hero – Enrique Iglesias I Want to Be Loved – Etta James Woman – John Lennon I’ll Trust You – Josh Abbott Band Hands Down – Dashboard Confessional Collide – Howie Day The Story – Brandi Carlile The Shoop Shoop Song – Cher […]
