Why visit Norway?
Love at the Northern Lights is dedicated to my dad and to the dreams we shared. The story isn’t about him, or me, but it was inspired by our conversations and our bucket list. My dad was one of my best friends and we always planned on travelling together. Norway was one of the places we talked about visiting. With its mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords, it sounded perfect. There would be the chance to see authentic Viking ships in Oslo’s museum, to take a cruise on the Sognedfjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord – and to hike and ski. And, of course, there would be the opportunity to visit the city of Tromsø, to ride on a sleigh through the snow, and hopefully witness the magnificent Aurora borealis. Sadly, my dad passed away in 2004, but one day I aim to see the northern lights for us both. He was so full of enthusiasm for life and his ready smile and his wit made me laugh all the time. He is never far from my thoughts.
Here are a few of the reasons why I would love to visit Norway (although there are many more):
(1)
Norway has been described as one of the happiest places on earth to live. In 2017, Norway claimed first place on the world’s happiest places to live list, according to a United Nations agency report, so hopefully visiting this country will lead to sharing in some of that happiness.
(2)
You can go on a trip to Tromsø in Northern Norway to see the Northern Lights. Tromsø is located in the middle of the Northern Lights Oval – one of the best places to see the Northern Lights.
(3)
In northern Norway, there is a collection of islands known as Lofoten. These islands have majestic mountains, sandy beaches and dramatic fjords. Visitors can enjoy the scenery, watch the wildlife and visit the picturesque fishing villages. Lofoten is an area rich in history, especially its Viking history, and because of this, there are several museums and galleries located on the Lofoten Islands for visitors to enjoy, including the wonderful Lofotr Viking Museum.
(4)
You can see the midnight sun and, if you’re lucky, spot polar bears in the wild. On the Svalbard Islands, which are located in the Arctic Ocean – halfway between Norway and the North Pole – you might catch a glimpse of wild polar bears.
(5)
You can visit Oslo, Norway’s capital. There you can go to the Viking Ship Museum and see three almost perfectly preserved Viking ships and maybe even spot a modern day Viking like Jonas from Love at the Northern Lights. If you’re a coffee fan, like me, Oslo takes coffee very seriously, so you can spend some time enjoying this delicious drink as you eat a slice of Norway’s Best Cake (perfect for foodies) – Verden’s Beste. You can follow this up with a long walk along the harbour and enjoy the shops, cafes and restaurants along the recently developed site.
Norway seems like a wonderful location to visit and there are so many things to do there that one trip probably won’t be enough. I’m saving my pennies! How about you? 🙂
