Review: Consort of Secrets by Eva Chase

The Faerie Queen’s review Ever since Reverse Harem Month, I’ve been keeping an eye on the subgenre. There’s something extra delightfully naughty about not having to choose between your favourite types of heroes. You can have the bad boy, the nice guy, the dark and handsome figure… It may not be common in real life, but romance allows us to explore our fantasies, and having a group to give you the love you desire (physically and emotionally) is actually a rather nice one. And you know what? This was a rather nice reverse harem story. It was easy to read, and very quick, too. It didn’t take long to jump onto the action, and I had my suspicions and hopes set from the very beginning. The Big Bad was somewhat of a stereotype, but I was fine with that. And as much as I love my romance, it was sort […]

Interview & Excerpt: My Once and Future Duke by Caroline Linden

Hey everyone! Today, we’re joined by Caroline Linden, author of My Once and Future Duke, for a special Q&A! See what Caroline thinks about being a writer. You can also find out more about her book, read an excerpt, and enter a giveaway at the end! And if you want to know what we think about the book, the GingerSnap reviewed My Once and Future Duke on her blog. Our interview with Caroline What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? I went to Bath in England. It wasn’t entirely a pilgrimage, but it was very inspirational—I wrote a book (Blame It on Bath) set there solely because I’d been and seen it for myself, and also spent a fortune on research materials I was very keen to deduct as work-related. What are common traps for aspiring writers? I suspect the two biggest are almost diametrically opposite. One is thinking that your book must be […]

Review: From the Top by Dani Collins

Review: From the Top by Dani Collins

The Faerie Queen’s review CW: This book does bring up past sexual harassment, as well as a pregnancy-related experience that some readers might want to avoid. It’s up to you whether you want to be warned:  From the Top released just after the Winter Olympics, and the timing was perfect. Why? Because it’s set right after the Olympics. After a New Year’s Eve fling, Ilke intended to continue with her dreams of gold medals, only to crash and burn thanks to an unexpected pregnancy. From the Top opens with Ilke returning to the site of her one-night-stand, and the man she had such an enjoyable night with. The problem? Neither had any intention of seeing each other, or of getting into any relationship in the first place. I haven’t read the first book, and I think this might be a case where reading the first book in a romance series is […]

Review & Excerpt: A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

The Faerie Queen’s review So you’ve technically read a review of this book on this site before. But you see, I couldn’t resist not reading it myself after the GingerSnap raved about it. Like Emily, I found so much to love with this book, which was basically a soulmates meets science adventure. First off, it featured a lady scientist! YES! STEMMETTE! And it wasn’t just a Convenient Job that some authors give their characters to explain them earning money, or so that they have coworkers to talk about their love life with. No, Naledi was a scientist through and through, and I loved how focused she was on her career and the insight into how being a woman – and being a POC – affected how she did her work. (Damnit, Brian, you classic white man.) Here was a woman who knew what she wanted and was prepared to work […]

Review: Make Me Want by Katee Robert

Review: Make Me Want by Katee Robert

The Faerie Queen’s review This is the second book by Katee Robert that I’ve read, and I’m starting to notice a trend. Or rather, three trends. She writes hot sex. While her heroes are very alpha, her heroines are just as strong and powerful. Combining those two, there is a large focus on empowering heroines to express their own desires. It’s not all about what the heroes want in the bedroom. While Make Me Want didn’t have the same impact on me as The Bastard’s Bargain (but then that did have much higher stakes), I was still very impressed with this, especially considering the shorter page count. It was a quick jab of heat and emotion. The beginning was a whirlwind. Lucy was facing that wonderful challenge of being a working woman (I say sarcastically): despite being an incredible employee, she anticipated being passed up for promotion because of her lack of a […]

Bennett.” His eyes widened at her use of his first name, and he blinked a few times. Overcome by his emotions, perhaps? She smiled reassuringly. “We feel the same way about so many things.” She put her hand on his sleeve. His gaze went to where her hand lay, and she wished she was daring enough to run the fingers of her other hand through his hair. She wasn’t, not yet. Perhaps later, after everything was settled. “And since we are of much the same mind, I know that it […]

I could feel the chemistry and was invested in the relationship from the first chapter. A few things made this really work for me. First of all, the […]

Enjoy an excerpt from the book, enter the giveaway, and look forward to a review next month as we explore sports romance! About the book Excerpt Nyree knew it was two kilometers to Achilles Point. She didn’t look at her watch to see how long it was taking. The point was, she made it. She puffed her way up the final incline, which felt more like a mountain, tried to tell herself, Gorgeous sea view, and failed. Maybe it was the black spots that were swimming in her vision. She bent over from the waist to haul in a few precious breaths and focused on not being sick. When she stood up again, she saw him. He’d just run the stairs from the beach. She […]

Review: The Trouble with True Love by Laura Lee Guhrke

Review: The Trouble with True Love by Laura Lee Guhrke

The Faerie Queen’s review I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but contemporary romances have typically been my thing. You see, I adore Jane Austen, and though her books are very tame by today’s standards, they nevertheless have a power over me, one that brings me back time and again for more Darcy. (I love other classics, too, but I am an Austen fangirl.) I had an unfortunate experience with the first historical romance I read, back when I first became a blogger three years ago, and it has coloured my view of the genre. I have, for the most part, avoided it since then. This book was completely unputdownable. I haven’t eaten in 16 hours, aside from a couple pieces of dark chocolate. I managed to pull myself away long enough to get 5 hours of sleep and go to the bathroom when I couldn’t hold it in any longer. […]
