The world of romance is filled with all sorts of weird and wonderful books with equally weird and wonderful covers. They say not to judge a book by its cover, but covers have an important job. In a busy market, they need to get the attention of potential readers. We thought we’d have a little fun each Sunday, sharing with you all some of the covers that do manage to do their job and catch our eye. Share with us your covers and thoughts in the comments!
Since this is all about covers, we’re not going to give you too much info on the books. If you’re intrigued and want to learn more, we’ve got links to both Goodreads and Amazon. If you hop straight to Amazon and purchase the book, it’ll help to keep LiatoF alive and sharing more of these covers!
Ok, the first thing I thought about when I saw this was that the book would be about a guy that impregnates women for a living. The title is just so upfront, and I LOVED it. I needed to find out more. It’s not quite what I thought it would be, but close, and yes, I did buy it.
NO ONE’S ABS ARE THAT CUT. Also, this cover seems totally at odds with the tagline: “First comes baby in the baby carriage”. A hot dude with an open shirt just does not evoke prams for me.
(FQ: Oh, but they do evoke activities that might lead to prams…)
What kind of gods? What kind of monsters? The title makes it sound like it should be an urban fantasy or paranormal romance, but the cover? Not so much. This cover says nothing to me. Also, is the fact he’s wearing a cross meaningful in some way? Is he a self-proclaimed monster seeking redemption???
How does a shirtless guy relate to Gods and Monsters? This came up on my Amazon recommendations list, and after reading the synopsis, I still have no idea what gods and monsters have to do with this story, but I am so intrigued. Also, is he sniffing the air? Hanging his head back in resignation? Closing his eyes and just wishing this photoshoot was over?
This cover makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable. The title makes me think the guy was defending rape. I was hoping the blurb would make things better, but it didn’t. I can’t help but squirm each time I glance at it.
Look, I understand that dark romance is a thing, and it does a lot of line-crossing at times, and fiction is a place to safely explore that… But… Is now really the time to be releasing a book with this title?
Looking at the reviews, it seems like I might be missing out on something, though. It’s got an average rating of over 4 stars on Goodreads, with over 1000 ratings in the month and a bit it’s been out. But it also sounds like it’ll be angsty to the extreme, so I don’t know if I’ll be picking it up soon. There’s only so much darkness I can deal with.
Just looking at this cover gives me a stomach ache, and the description does not help. Why do people write these books?!?!
What do these covers make you think? Have you got any books you’d like us to comment on?
