Guest Post & Excerpt: Mara Gan, author of Joined, on her writing routine

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Mara Gan, author of Joined! Today, Mara will be talking about her writing routine. You can also find out more about her book and enter a giveaway at the end! Mara Gan’s writing routine I have a full-time job apart from writing, so I tend to daydream a lot of my stories for a while before I get around to writing them down. But when I write, either for my job or for my life as an author, I make myself a cup of green tea, read a little bit of news on my laptop, and turn on Netflix. I often stray toward Friends or Star Trek: The Next Generation, because I know all the episodes so well that it doesn’t distract me into paying rapt attention, but I like having a little bit of conversation noise in the background. For whatever […]

Review: Necessary Roughness by Julie Brannagh

Review: Necessary Roughness by Julie Brannagh

The Faerie Queen’s review After an ok start, this book slowly but surely got worse and worse. The only reason I kept going is because someone said the ending was ok. While the main characters – Jordan and Tanner – were fine, the secondary characters, particularly the women, were a joke. They all seemed to be caricatures: either they were ditzy, or they were ditzy AND cruel. Tanner’s first live-in nurse showed up for a couple of scenes, only to decide to sexually harass him out of nowhere, and this was somehow connected to the ex-girlfriend who dumped him but then kept sending him sexts. It was like all the women had to be nightmares to make Jordan look like the only option. The relationship between Jordan and Tanner also didn’t make sense. They claimed to hate each other, but there wasn’t enough showing of this. If anything, maybe they […]

Review: The Cowboy’s Rebellious Bride by Laurie LeClair

Review: The Cowboy’s Rebellious Bride by Laurie LeClair

The Faerie Queen’s review This wasn’t a bad book. But it wasn’t a good book either. It was just, on average, a meh book. The plot was a bit of a disaster. People thrown in here and there for the sake of drama without it really making sense for the story. Like Tabitha, Cody’s ex, suddenly showing up out of nowhere, HOURS after a run-in with another ex. And all out of town. What really are the chances of that happening??? Characters also behaved in strange ways, like Hannah’s weird leap of logic towards the end. The plot didn’t flow, and there’s no way around that. The book also seemed really preachy. The most bizarre characters, the Fruit Spinsters (they’re called Clementine and Peach), tried to protect Hannah’s honour by not letting her see Cody alone before the wedding (um, I’m sure Hannah wasn’t a virgin given her previous forays). […]

Playlist & Excerpt: Meeting His Match by Shannyn Schroeder

It’s two for the price of one today! I’ve got a playlist AND an excerpt from Meeting His Match by Shannyn Schroeder! About the book Playlist For every book I write, I create a playlist before I sit down to compose a single word. I listen to the music all the time—in the house, in the car—because it’s my way of keeping the story moving in my head. I use it to connect with my characters – at least who I think they’ll be once I start writing. Here’s the playlist for Meeting His Match. Put Your Hands on Me – Joss Stone After You – Meg Myers Hero – Enrique Iglesias I Want to Be Loved – Etta James Woman – John Lennon I’ll Trust You – Josh Abbott Band Hands Down – Dashboard Confessional Collide – Howie Day The Story – Brandi Carlile The Shoop Shoop Song – Cher […]

Review: Perfect Ten by Kelley R. Martin

Review: Perfect Ten by Kelley R. Martin

The Faerie Queen’s review This was so quick and easy to read! With a charming hero, a feisty heroine, and several sex scenes packed into the 125 pages, it was nice and naughty train read that I really enjoyed. So much so that I gave it 4 stars. That is, until I realised something. This blog is called Love in a time of Feminism, so you’d imagine we’d like ladies with substance round here. On the surface, there is a bit of that; Caroline doesn’t take shit from men, and she’s determined to support her retired mother and student brother. But dig a little deeper, and what do you find? A heroine with conveniently no dreams or aspirations of her own. Not once was what she wants in her future really discussed, aside from where she wants to live. Makes it super convenient for her to give up her life, doesn’t […]

Review and Excerpt: The Duke by Katharine Ashe

Review and Excerpt: The Duke by Katharine Ashe

The Faerie Queen’s review Talk about a slow burn. This book made me wait. I’ll admit that I am not the most patient with books, and I did find this really difficult in the middle, but I’m glad I stuck it out because the last 30% was worth it. I don’t really read historical romance, but it’s a very popular subgenre of romance, so I naturally have to try a book every now and then. I find that it can be a bit OTT with the language of the time, and the last one I tried reading for review basically took a bunch of Austen characters, gave them new names, and threw them into a different historical setting. Yes, there are commonalities that are acceptable across the genre, but there should also be originality. And I think that’s why I made it through The Duke when I haven’t been able to with other […]

Review: Breakaway by Sophia Henry

Review: Breakaway by Sophia Henry

The Faerie Queen’s review Ice hockey romances are this lady’s crack. (Ok, maybe, in the context of something in this book, I shouldn’t have said that.) Again, I know nothing about ice hockey, nor have I ever seen a game, but hey, not everything in life makes sense. I really liked the dynamic between Bree and Luke. It felt natural and sexy, as did the non-physical connection as it slowly built. Two things, in particular, made this stand out for me. First, Bree knew what she wanted – especially in the bedroom – and didn’t try to be all coy or embarrassed about it. Second, the attitude to flings on both parts was refreshing. There was no shame to it. And then the girl was the one to be hesitant to make it more serious. Love it. While there was drama, it wasn’t overpowering like romance novels can be. It was […]

Excerpt: This Baby Business by Heatherly Bell

Hiya! Today, we’ve got an excerpt of This Baby Business by Heatherly Bell, plus a giveaway for digital versions of the first two books in the Heroes of Fortune Valley series! About the book Excerpt Carly sat on a chair in Stone’s office, streaks of mud on her chin, cheeks and nose. Blond hair wild and unruly. Short dress muddy. Even her sandals had been through the wringer. She looked like she’d been in a fight with a…well, a pig. Which told him two new things about this woman: she did not give up easily, or mind getting a little dirty in the process. Good to know. He wiped mud off her chin with the wet towel Emily had given her and bit his lower lip. “There’s an old saying. If you wrestle with a pig, you’ll get dirty. And the pig will only—” She held up her index finger. “Don’t […]
