Review: The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

The Faerie Queen’s review I’m going to say something absolutely ridiculous, and I am fully aware of how ridiculous this is. You’re all going to roll your eyes and lose respect for me or something… But I was a little bored listening to this. Emily thinks I would have liked it more if I’d read it, but I don’t know. It’s just… as AMAZING as some of the things in this book were (see below), I felt no compulsion to finish this other than because it was an easy thing to finish. I wasn’t caught up in the romance, in the feelings. I felt nothing in all the positive and empowering sex, and that is always a sad state of affairs for me. And here’s the thing that’s going to make you groan… Everything was so grown up and mature and realistic. Which I know other people will like, but […]

Buddy Read Review: Company Ink by Kat Colburn

Buddy Read Review: Company Ink by Kat Colburn

The Faerie Queen’s review I felt terrible going on to Goodreads to leave my review of this book, since there seemed to be an overwhelming amount of love for the book there. I didn’t want to rock the boat too much. I’m just glad Emily and I were on the same page with this book, though I did make it to the end…kinda. Apparently this book is 247 pages in print, but it felt much longer and slower. So slow that I reached page 74, got frustrated, and skipped to page 200. I wanted to love it all considering the main character was named Dani, was a techie, and didn’t like when people lie. She felt stuck in her job, and she hated how sales was prioritised over customer service. She was basically me. In so many ways. (Just to reassure you, I do like my job, but everywhere I work, sales always trumps […]

Review: The Best Friend Incident by Melia Alexander

Review: The Best Friend Incident by Melia Alexander

The Faerie Queen’s review After a couple dud books, I needed something cute, and The Best Friend Incident delivered. With just enough angst and a conflict that didn’t last too long, it was a quick, sweet read about two best friends who start to feel some non-friendy things for each other after a case of mistaken identity in the dark. And it came complete with a wise old man! Stacey was a very bubbly sort, but not in an overbearing way. She was caring and ambitious, and she clearly had to be very detail-oriented to start a business creating perfect romantic dates for couples. (By the way, what a great idea, catering to people who want to be romantic but aren’t good at organising dates or don’t have time to.) I loved that she was a romantic; she knew what she wanted, and why should she have to settle? Meanwhile, Grant […]

Review: Sparks Fly by Lauren Runow

The Faerie Queen’s review DNF @ 21% Another book I wanted to like but clearly wasn’t meant for me. I wasn’t ok with a few things, but I wanted to get through to the end after reading other reviews. However, I finally reached a point where I thought “this isn’t ok” and had to admit defeat. Here’s what led to my decision… The prince is a from a country called Canterbury. Every time this was brought up, I was jarred, since Canterbury is a real city in England. I think it would have been better to make up a completely new country name so as to avoid this (and comments from my status update from other readers support this suggestion). Sage’s mom seemed really weak, and his dad was just rude and controlling. I know this isn’t a big issue and can work, but they seemed a bit two-dimensional, like […]

Interview & Giveaway: All That Jazz by Natasha Boyd

Hey everyone! Today, we’re joined by Natasha Boyd, author of All That Jazz and so many more, for a special Q&A! See what Natasha thinks about writing romantic comedies and overcoming writer’s block. Plus, we have an extra special giveaway for our UK readers… FOUR signed copies of All That Jazz, plus swag!!! Interview with Natasha Boyd You’ve written quite a few books! What themes do you try to include in each of them? I never try per se, but I do find that most of my books have a few elements in common that I guess reflect my values. Those are that my heroines are independent, or struggling to be independent. They are strong in the ways that count, even if they have weak moments, or cry and get upset sometimes, at their core they are resilient and don’t stand for being pushed around. Their big struggle is usually how to rely on […]

Review: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Review: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

The Faerie Queen’s review I AM IN A PUDDLE OF FEELINGS. GAAAAH. I finished this book days ago, and I still can’t deal with the fact that it’s over. I both regret and don’t regret the binge-reading (finished in less than 24 hours…mid-work week). I’m just glad I have this in both audio and Kindle format so that I can read/listen again and again whenever I want because THIS WAS TOO GOOD. (The audio is done really well, FYI.) I love love love hate-to-love romances, and this one is done so well and so uniquely. We’ve got forced proximity on a daily basis, glorious banter, and oodles of sexual tension. OODLES. If you follow me on Twitter or have read other reviews by me, you might know that I am not a fan of the short and petite heroine thing. Not every damn heroine needs to be a tiny redhead. […]

Review & Excerpt: Hurts to Love You by Alisha Rai

The Faerie Queen’s review Of course I go ahead and do the smart thing… I read the last book in a trilogy first. I mean, look, I know, it doesn’t really matter. It’s a romance series. But guys, I actually seriously enjoyed this, and I wish I’d been along for the ride from the very beginning. Because if I go back now, I will have to endure this book’s main characters as they were before I’ve seen their growth, and it’ll frustrate me. I suppose, on the other hand, I’ll know things work out. Oh well, it’ll be worth it. This is my first book by Alisha Rai, and I doubt it’ll be my last. (I definitely need to read the second book about Jackson, because he is a serious introvert, like me. I liked seeing how Eve accepted his need for solitude and no small talk, and how she explained […]

Review: Kulti by Mariana Zapata

Review: Kulti by Mariana Zapata

The Faerie Queen’s review Mariana Zapata is one of my few auto-buy authors for a reason. She is a goddess. Her books tend to be on the long side, especially for a contemporary, but I am never bored while reading/listening. (To be fair, I’ve only read three of her books so far, but I’ve got all the ones I can get from Audible lined up and ready to go, and I’ve got From Lukov With Love on my Kindle just waiting for me to dive in.) This book is long. 572 pages, or over 16 hours of audio goodness. Prepare yourself, but also realise that I listened to it within 48 hours, it was so good. (I also listen to everything at at least 1.25x speed, if not 1.5x, so that helped.) One thing I’ve noticed about Mariana’s covers is that they don’t stand out as romance. Instead of going with […]

Excerpt: Shopping for a Billionaire by Julia Kent

Good evening! Who here likes their romantic comedies with a side of money? Because Shopping for a Billionaire by Julia Kent is free right now, and we’ve got an excerpt to get you started! Here’s a bit more about the book, and don’t mis the giveaway at the end for a $25 Gyft.com card! About the book Excerpt Whoosh! Whoosh! I flush both urinals, then rush over to toilet #1. Whoosh! I stand in front of the stall to #2 and get ready to flush that one. I’m in my own little world and let my guard down to ponder the question. I am also exhausted and most definitely not in top form, because I let a few seconds go by before realizing that someone is coming in the bathroom. Out of the corner of my eye I see a business shoe, and that becomes a blur as I scurry into one of […]

Review: Level Me Up by Lauren Helms

Review: Level Me Up by Lauren Helms

The Faerie Queen’s review I have found my niche: gamer romances. I’m a gamer myself (though not of FPS… first person shooters), and the Boyf loves his DOTA2. I’m only just discovering that there’s a whole subgenre of geeky new adult and adult contemporary romance. And this even fits the sports romance theme this month, as esports is a legit thing! (It brought in $1.5b in revenue in 2017, and The International 2017 winners won $10,862,683. That’s the biggest DOTA2 major, and yes, I watched some of the games with the Boyf.) Everything started out really great. I started listening on my way to a convention – RARE18 London, a huge romance event in fact. I thought it was fitting when the book starts at ComicCon (and I am actually going to the London Film & Comic Con with my boyfriend in July). Bookish Morgan tags along with her friend […]
