(Partly Audiobook) Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

(Partly Audiobook) Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

This is not chick-lit. This isn’t fluffy contemporary. This is an incredibly important book on an incredibly important topic. Moyes has crafted a moving story about two people from different worlds who have to spend a lot of time together. I started out listening to the audiobook version and then was so swept up in the story that I needed to buy the Kindle version just so I could read it faster. Will, Lou and all the other characters were so incredibly well-written that I had a hard time letting go at the end. (It’s a good thing the sequel came out […]

Review: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Review: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Quick review Everything, Everything made me feel everything, but mostly heart-happy. I wanted to squeal and squirm with giddiness whenever Maddie interacted with Olly. The two of them were totally adorable together, but they were also totally love-drunk in the way only teenagers can be, leading to some very questionable decisions. I felt hope, frustration, a sense of doom, suspicion and despair while reading this, proving that Yoon really could get you to feel everything, everything. (Sorry for the cheese!) A one-sitting read, Everything, Everything is the best YA contemporary of read so far this year! Not so quick review So some […]

Review: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

Review: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

Quick review Finding Audrey was like cuddling up in bed with a warm blanket. Kinsella stepped away from shopping and addressed a difficult issue with this book, and she did it in such a relatable way. The first person narrative put the reader into the shoes of a teenager with anxiety and showing that a mental illness does not strip away a person’s sense of humour and personality. The characters were all lovable, even the mom, and I laughed so hard in parts because I could see my family in Audrey’s. I read this book in a day, spurred on by the warm and fuzzies, and […]

Review: Something to Hide by Deborah Moggach

Review: Something to Hide by Deborah Moggach

Follow my blog with Bloglovin‘ Quick review Something to Hide follows the lives of three very different women on three different continents, all somehow connected by the massive but often forgotten continent that is Africa. Who they really are and how they are connected is not immediately made clear, and Moggach takes her time weaving the intricate storylines until the reader finally experiences the satisfying moment of the last puzzle piece fitting into place. While the book is not necessarily fast-paced or action-packed, there is a sense of mystery: who are these people and what are they hiding? This was not a book […]

Review: Capturing Jasmina by Kimberly Rae

Review: Capturing Jasmina by Kimberly Rae

Quick review The blurb will tell you this is about a girl and her experiences as a child slave in India. What it doesn’t tell you is that half the book rushes through three years in superficial detail, then describes the work of missionaries and their converts. On the one hand, the subject matter (i.e. child trafficking) is one that deserves attention; on the other, I felt like I was reading an extended Christian propaganda pamphlet. Despite the heavy subject matter, I found myself feeling nothing throughout the book. Skip to the video at the end of the review to […]

Review: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Review: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Quick review Rowell manages to capture the uncertainties and overwhelming nature of young love in this novel starring Eleanor and Park (bet you didn’t guess that!). The constantly switching points of view draw you in and let you fully experience the romance. She brings to life various social issues that many people have to deal with and aren’t often included in novels, especially all at once (even though they represent the reality for many), such as poverty, domestic abuse and racism. Rowell proves herself a mastermind at writing deep, complex and unique teenage characters that you will feel like you […]

Review: Geek Girl by Holly Smale

Review: Geek Girl by Holly Smale

Quick review Geek Girl is the first book in the series of the same name. Narrated by Harriet Manners, it tells the story of Harriet’s fall into the fashion world, a world she’s never been interested in by dives deeper into so she can escape her old one. It is a fun, easy and actually pretty inspirational book for primarily teenage girls. I thoroughly recommend this book to any girl/woman who feels like a polar bear in a tropical jungle, not sure how to fit in with the lemurs and parrots. Not so quick review I’d first like to start […]
