Review: Rare and Beautiful Things by Giselle Fox

The Faerie Queen’s review I must be the blackest of black sheep with this book, as almost all of the reviews on Goodreads are 4 or 5 stars. Everyone raves about the characters and how sweet the romance is. Me? I think this gif sums it up. Three years ago, Nikki and Amber met on a boat, felt an initial attraction, and then quickly parted ways because Amber got freaked out by another woman paying Nikki attention. Skip to present-day, and Amber’s in Belize studying jaguars when, lo and behold, Nikki shows up with her dive team. Nikki doesn’t hide that she wants to get all up in Amber’s business, and Amber is awkward and scientific about it all, not letting it happen despite acknowledging that she is experiencing arousal. This was not sexy. I get it; Amber is a virgin scientist, but that doesn’t mean she needs to be […]

Excerpt: All I Want is You by Cassie Cross

It’s release day for All I Want is You by Cassie Cross, and I’ve got a couple of tasty treats to get you hooked on this sexy standalone novella. Here’s the usual book info, followed by TWO excerpts (I couldn’t pick one…), and finishing off with a giveaway at the end! About the book Excerpt #1 Hot Guy is incredibly tall, has a mop of dirty-blond hair, and raspy scruff peppering his movie-star jawline. A tight henley shows off every inch of his broad chest and muscular arms from where he stands across the room, just staring at me. Seems I’ve caught his eye, too. That never happens to me. His lips part when our eyes meet, like he wants to call out to me or something, but instead he keeps on staring. Staring in a way that makes my heart beat double time, that makes my knees weak. He doesn’t smile, […]

Review: Heat Wave by Karina Halle

The Faerie Queen’s review Have you ever procrastinated a review for so long that when you finally come to write it, it’s eight months later and you’re like damn. Yes, it’s been a while, but I’m going to spin this in my favour. You see, this way you’ll know what the really memorable aspects were, and not just my giddy feelings right after finishing. Ok, so what do I remember the most? WELL. This book was hot as hell. Sexual tension and rough sex abound. Yes, rough and dominating and woah. Yeah, there’s a plot, but it revolves around two people who shouldn’t be together but who can’t help but need each other, at least in the physical sense. Why shouldn’t they be together? Because Logan and Ronnie have a past. Logan married Ronnie’s perfect sister, started a hotel with her in Hawaii, and then lost her in a car […]

I just couldn’t go home after everything he told me. I didn’t accept the invite to come with him on the boat today though. I didn’t ask him if he was going without me either. If he is, wouldn’t he be inviting some “friends,” some Alicias or Silks? I don’t want to know. It’s not difficult to get my shifts back at Mintrer’s. With Il Signore’s nonna at the hospital, the family spends as much time at her bedside as […]

Guest Post: Melissa Chambers, author of Falling for Forever, on discovering romance novels

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Melissa Chambers, author of FALLING FOR FOREVER! Today, Melissa will be talking about discovering and writing romance. You can also find out more about their book and enter a giveaway at the end! Discovering Romance So often, when I hear romance authors talk about their path to writing, they say they would sneak their mother’s Harlequin novels as preteens and teenagers, or they would ditch class in college to read a new romance novel from their favorite author. They talk about how they have read romance novels since the dawning of their time…and I sink down lower in my chair. Here’s a secret I don’t tell very often. I read my first romance novel in 2011. It’s true. I would read chick lit like Bridget Jones’s Diary and Sex and the City, but it never would have dawned on me to go […]

Excerpt: More Than This by Clare James

Hiya, and welcome back! Today, we’re giving you a little taste of MORE THAN THIS by Clare James! There’s a sale on at the moment, and you can pick up this particular book in the Impossible Love series for FREE. First, here’s a bit more about the book, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway at the end! About the book Excerpt If a picture is worth a thousand words, I’m pretty sure this one includes every dirty term in the dictionary… and even some that aren’t. Because…whoa! But it’s not so much a picture that’s currently conjuring up these filthy words as it is a live image, complete with a real-life man. And as I stand in the room, like I have so many times, I assess him as I would any subject—taking in the light and the lines, the colors and composition. My eyes are the lens and I zoom-in […]

Review: Dear Aaron by Mariana Zapata

Review: Dear Aaron by Mariana Zapata

The Faerie Queen’s review I LOVED THIS BOOK. The timing of its release was perfect. I had a group project to work on and was getting stressed, and this helped me to escape into romantic lalaland. I found myself drawn to my Kindle any time I had a free moment to spare, and I sure as hell did not get as much sleep as I could have. I found Ruby relatable as a 23/24yo. She had certain skills, but she didn’t really believe in herself or have it all together. She was ok-ish with her looks, not hating them but not thinking she was Hot Stuff. There was just enough clumsiness and funny reactions to make her believable without her being The Clumsy Stereotype. I could also understand Ruby’s relationships with family members, and how living at home made her feel and behave like a kid, as even though I […]

Review: Some Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe

Review: Some Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe

The Faerie Queen’s review I knew I was going to like this one, but I didn’t realise I would like it as much as I did! What a pleasant surprise! I liked both Eden and Adam from the start. Eden was relatable in so many ways, from her interest in biology and genetics (YAY STEM) to her desire to find a guy with a stable job (but, ya know, that goes out the window fairly quickly). I loved Adam and how down-to-Earth he was (now). Their chemistry was really well-written, though I never felt consumed by it. I LOVED that Adam wasn’t Broken, which is the rock star stereotype in books. In fact, I think part of the conflict in the book came down to Eden thinking he’d be like a rock star stereotype, partying all the time and sleeping around, even when his words and behaviour showed he wasn’t. As with 90% […]

Review: Playing Pretend by Juliana Haygert

Review: Playing Pretend by Juliana Haygert

The Faerie Queen’s review This was a quick, easy read. Starring Charlotte –a reluctant rich college girl– and Mason –a Masters student on the rebound after a failed relationship– who meet on spring break, have an obsessive fling and then split, not sharing personal info because they believe they’ll never meet again. And yet they do meet, and the truth comes out. Both Charlotte and Mason were likeable enough, and they worked well together, except when there was drama. (There’s always drama.) While there was some heat in this book, it wasn’t too graphic, at least compared to some other NA books I’ve read. My main issue with this book was that it was a bit too formulaic. Petite heroine (seriously??? Again???); towering hero (ok, not complaining about this one); repetitive, “perfect” sex; secrets that, if they came out, would ruin everything. I know NA books do tend to have a similar basic plot structure, […]
