#BookReview: OPTIMISTS DIE FIRST by Susin Nielsen

#BookReview: OPTIMISTS DIE FIRST by Susin Nielsen

This is a tough one to review. In some ways, I really enjoyed it. However, it also had its limitations, and I’m not sure how well the good outweighed the not so good. On the positive side of the seesaw, the characters were all very quirky. I started out really enjoying it, particularly Petula’s pessimism. I could relate to it a whoooole lot. I mean, I like to call my personal strain of pessimism “realism”, but it’s essentially the same. Prepare the worst mentality, you know, except Petula took it a lot further than I did. I also liked the […]

#BookReview: RELATIVITY by Antonia Hayes

#BookReview: RELATIVITY by Antonia Hayes

I don’t often read “adult” contemporary fiction. Not many catch my eye, and they don’t hold the same grip on me as young adult or new adult fiction, which I find more relatable. That being said, even before I was asked to participate in this blog tour, I’d had my eye on Relativity. I picked the book up at the right time. I’ve been going through a science kick this past week or so. For a start, a friend has got me into watching The Flash, and I’ve binged my way through the first season because YES PLEASE AMAZING. I’ve also […]

#BookReview: A QUIET KIND OF THUNDER by Sara Barnard

#BookReview: A QUIET KIND OF THUNDER by Sara Barnard

Trigger warning: anxiety, panic attacks, grief. It took 5 pages for me to develop a crush on A Quiet Kind of Thunder, one that built quickly but consistently into adoration. By the end, I was in love. This could very well be my favourite contemporary YA of all time. It has left a warm glow about my heart that continues to linger past the closing of the final page. I made my way through the book with a giant stupid grin on my face, despite reading it partly on the train and in class during the break (I couldn’t resist!). […]

#BookReview: GIRL AGAINST THE UNIVERSE by Paula Stokes

#BookReview: GIRL AGAINST THE UNIVERSE by Paula Stokes

This book is pretty much… PERFECTION. I honestly have nothing critical to say about it. First, let me say thank you to Jamie for buying it for me when I couldn’t get hold of it in the UK. Also, a big thank you to Paula Stokes for the signed bookplate! There are so many things I loved about this book. The story opens up several years after a car accident that killed Maguire’s father, brother and uncle, yet left her unscathed. Soon after, she experiences other accidents that affect everyone but her. This leads Maguire to believe that she is cursed, […]

#BookReview: THANKS A LOT, JOHN LECLAIR by Johanna Parkhurst

#BookReview: THANKS A LOT, JOHN LECLAIR by Johanna Parkhurst

Hey, an ice hockey romance! Of course, I had to read it!!! This is a companion to Here’s to You, Zeb Pike, which I haven’t read. To some extent, it might be better to read that first, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Parkhurst introduces the main characters well enough to enjoy this book on its own. Really well, in fact, as I could connect with Emmitt within a couple of chapters! He seemed genuine in his drive to succeed, his high achievements coupled with a lot of humility. I liked how each chapter started with a letter from Emmitt to his […]

#BookReview: FORGET ME ALWAYS by Sara Wolf

Trigger warning for domestic abuse, terminal illness and various mental health issues. STOP! Have you read the first book, Love Me Never? No? Well find out why I think you should here. Read that and wondering if you should read the next book in the series? Well, you’re in the right place! If you enjoyed Love Me Never, then you SHOULD read Forget Me Always. Isis is back as hilarious as ever, and I found myself wishing I could be more like her with her outward confidence. But we also saw more of Isis underneath all that, more of her past and […]

Guest #BookReview: THE LAST TRUE LOVE STORY by Brendan Kiely

Guest #BookReview: THE LAST TRUE LOVE STORY by Brendan Kiely

This one was alright. I didn’t feel an emotional connection to the characters until the very end and thought that it took a bit too much time to get to anything really significant in the novel. I think I wanted to like this one more than I actually did tbh. It’s not that this was a bad book or anything of the sort, I just found myself being really apathetic toward the whole situation. I think with road trip books there is a fine line between “Okay I would do this” and “So we are just trying to get some […]
