Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: Mistake of Magic by Alex Lidell

The Faerie Queen’s review YESSSS book 2 in the Power of Five series! I adored the first book, so I was psyched to read the second instalment. But also dead nervous because so many series that start well flop in the next book. In this book, the quint faces down the council, eager to break them one way or another. They must prove to the rest of the fae that Lera deserves to be there despite being human. Basically, that she is not, in fact, a mistake of magic. As with the first book, yes, this is a reverse harem romance, but it’s also a great fantasy story with an interesting world and lovable/detestable characters. I enjoyed seeing the inner workings of the Council, which was the main focus of this. But even more than that, I loved seeing all the men in Lera’s quint open up more and show other sides to […]

Review: Power of Five by Alex Lidell

The Faerie Queen’s review So you may have noticed my recent addiction to reverse harem romances. It really takes romance into the world of fantasy for me, entertaining this idea that I could have multiple gorgeous and interesting men all to myself. Add to that the fact that the men in Power of Five are fae and you’ve hooked me. There is a reason I call myself the Faerie Queen. I LOVE FAERIES. And I loved this book. As with all reverse harems, I could pinpoint the stereotypes that each guy played: the serious one, the playful one, the broken one, etc. But I was completely endeared to each and every one of them. They were each sexy and so warm in their own ways, though it took time for each to show this. Yes, ok, there was some insta-ness going on, given how magic had “chosen” them as a quint, […]

Guest Post: Melody Winter, author of Iniquity, on being 21

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Melody Winter, author of Iniquity! Today, Melody will be talking about how her life at 21 compared to Athena’s. You can also find out more about her book and enter a giveaway at the end! Melody and Athena at 21 It’s very different in a lot of ways. At 21 I was at university. I was independent to a certain degree, needing to cook, clean and do my own laundry. But even though I was busy studying, I also had quite an eventful social life and travelled a lot during vacations. Athena has a very restricted life in comparison. She’s been very much on her own since she was sixteen when her gran was killed. The only social life she has is meeting her friends in the evenings or celebrating with the whole village at the monthly feast. I think the biggest difference is […]

Guest Post: Katey Hawthorne, author of Alchemiya, talks about feminism

Hi everyone! We have a special guest post for you from Katey Hawthorne, author of Alchemiya! Today, Katey will be talking about how her characters would get involved in feminism in our world. You can also find out more about her book and enter a giveaway at the end! Would your characters, who fight against patriarchy in your book, get involved in feminism in our world, and in what way? For both Eugenia Ratna and Olivia Plumtree, the answer to part one of that question is a resounding “yes”. In their world, it’s alchemical knowledge rather than an old name or land ownership that designates nobility, but, well, nobility counts for a lot less these days anyhow. Still, they’d both want to use their family’s resources and name to uplift women and fight for equality every day. Eugenia’s main frustration with her world and society comes from inequality: she’s a far better alchemist than her older […]
