#BookReview: THE DREAMER by E.J. Mellow

I think the best way to describe my reaction to this book is… surprised. In a good way. I was initially attracted to this book because of the cover, and the blurb was interesting. Books involving dreaming and the subconscious fascinate me. Plus, there was the idea of going back and forth between worlds and the repercussions that this would have on the main character’s mind and body in real life. It reminded me of a YA series I started reading as a teenager, Stravaganza by Mary Hoffman, in which the main character also travels between places in his sleep. That series left a […]

#BookReview: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

#BookReview: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

So my first reaction after finishing this book was, if you spotted it on Goodreads, “OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG dead”. I’m still feeling that. I’m going to try explaining why, and I’m going to do so with a quick non-spoilery section and then a spoilery fangirling section. Plus, I’ve got all 32 of my Goodreads updates at the bottom if you want to see just how much I freaked out. I want to start by saying that I loved ACOTAR. It was one of my favourite books last year and involved a lot of rereading of sections. […]

#BookReview: Vengeance Be Mine by Louisa Lo [DNF]

#BookReview: Vengeance Be Mine by Louisa Lo [DNF]

DNF’d at 41% UGH. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I tried, and I failed. I couldn’t get myself to finish this book, and it wasn’t for any reason in particular, but I’ll still attempt to explain why it just didn’t work for me. There were some funny bits, and also a few poignant bits. I actually really liked how the book started out, with Megan on a practice run, giving a serial cheater a case of labour pains (his wife was pregnant). I liked the concept of vengeance demons as only part of the whole word of demons and other […]

#BookReview: Never Stop Falling by Ashley Drew

#BookReview: Never Stop Falling by Ashley Drew

I might be spoiling a bit here, but I feel like it’s important to share upfront, as I don’t think I would have been able to read this book had I not seen a warning at the bottom of someone else’s review. There is cheating in this book. If you are, like me, particularly sensitive to cheating, especially parental cheating, be careful going in. Now, moving on to business. The story of Nick and Corinne, best friends from birth, is told from dual POV chapters that jump back and forth in time. The book opens with a prologue in “present” […]

Review: Dream of Me by A. Star

Review: Dream of Me by A. Star

On Tuesday, I reviewed the first book in The Djinn Order, Wish for Me, and I really enjoyed it. If you haven’t read that book yet, bear in mind that this review will contain some light spoilers! I’m going to be honest here and say that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first. I was still able to read it easily and quickly, and I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t the same level of enjoyment. Some of the things I loved about Wish for Me were just taken a bit far for me in this book. For example, […]

Snap Review: Wish for Me by A. Star

Snap Review: Wish for Me by A. Star

Wish for Me was hilarious, exciting and oh so sexy. What more could you ask for from an NA fantasy romance? Glory and Irving were stellar characters, casting the other characters in shadow, which was a bit of a shame. Their chemistry was sizzling, with tantalising banter (‘LOL’ is appropriate here) and a rather seductive power struggle in and out of the bedroom. Glory was so kickass, and I loved that she didn’t fall into the same traps as other heroines. For example, when Irving grabbed her arm to stop her from walking away (why is there always grabbing???), she CALLED HIM ON IT. I […]

Review: My True Love Gave to Me, edited by Stephanie Perkins

Review: My True Love Gave to Me, edited by Stephanie Perkins

My True Love Gave to Me is a collection of twelve YA (and I would argue NA) romance short stories, written by established authors of the genre. There’s something for everyone in this collection, with contemporary, magical realism and rather trippy fantasy, though the majority would be categorised as contemporary, I would say. I enjoyed all of the stories, though some more than others. This book is great for the winter, especially if you want something short to read each night, or between longer books. Best and worst The best: The Lady and the Fox by Kelly Link The worst: Star of […]
