The Faerie Queen’s review

Anthologies are always a risk for me, especially when published independently. The last one I tried was a disaster, with no proofreading and only half-baked ideas. Writing short stories can often be tougher than writing novels, as you have less time to get the characters, world, and plot together. But I do try to pick up an anthology from time to time, especially when delving into a genre I haven’t read in a while, as it’s a way to almost play catch up with the genre, plus it’s a great way to get to know some new authors.

That’s why I gave this one a try. No, I didn’t read all of the stories. I’m a big believer in putting down books you don’t enjoy, and that applies to anthologies. If I wasn’t clicking with the story a couple chapters in, I moved on. In fact, I had to do that a few times due to poor editing and awkward dialogue. But it was worth it to enjoy the stories that did connect with me.

Secrets in the Shadows is the first of four anthologies releasing each month this summer, each focusing on a different subgenre of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited, or only 99p/99c if you want to buy it right out. Some of the stories inside are also the first in a series, so if you enjoy shapeshifter romance or want to try it out, pick this one up to discover some new authors and series to follow!
