Review: Perfect Ten by Kelley R. Martin

The Faerie Queen’s review This was so quick and easy to read! With a charming hero, a feisty heroine, and several sex scenes packed into the 125 pages, it was nice and naughty train read that I really enjoyed. So much so that I gave it 4 stars. That is, until I realised something. This blog is called Love in a time of Feminism, so you’d imagine we’d like ladies with substance round here. On the surface, there is a bit of that; Caroline doesn’t take shit from men, and she’s determined to support her retired mother and student brother. But dig a little deeper, and what do you find? A heroine with conveniently no dreams or aspirations of her own. Not once was what she wants in her future really discussed, aside from where she wants to live. Makes it super convenient for her to give up her life, doesn’t […]

Review: Some Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe

The Faerie Queen’s review I knew I was going to like this one, but I didn’t realise I would like it as much as I did! What a pleasant surprise! I liked both Eden and Adam from the start. Eden was relatable in so many ways, from her interest in biology and genetics (YAY STEM) to her desire to find a guy with a stable job (but, ya know, that goes out the window fairly quickly). I loved Adam and how down-to-Earth he was (now). Their chemistry was really well-written, though I never felt consumed by it. I LOVED that Adam wasn’t Broken, which is the rock star stereotype in books. In fact, I think part of the conflict in the book came down to Eden thinking he’d be like a rock star stereotype, partying all the time and sleeping around, even when his words and behaviour showed he wasn’t. As with 90% […]

Review: Drive Me Crazy by Tracy Wolff

Review: Drive Me Crazy by Tracy Wolff

The Faerie Queen’s review Drive Me Crazy started out a bit strange for me, but it quickly picked up after a few chapters. Before I get started, a few trigger warnings to mention: there is past child abuse, physical fighting and cheating in this one. At first, the interactions between Quinn and Elise felt awkward and forced, with the words claiming an intimacy and sizzle that didn’t come off the page. The author jumped right in and said that there should be something there, but we hadn’t had enough time to first get to know the characters. BUT THEN. It quickly escalated. The whole book takes place over several days, really, so it did seem a bit like insta-love, though this was tempered by the knowledge that, even though the two hadn’t seen each other for a decade, back in their teens, they had years of messing with each other – and then messing […]
