Review: A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

The GingerSnap’s review The saying goes that when one door closes, another opens. Applied to romance, it goes: when one book sucks, the next will be amazing. That has absolutely been true for me this week. This book is insanely good. Like, couldn’t-put-it-down stayed-up-way-too-late-reading-it I-want-to-read-it-again kind of good. The story begins with Naledi Smith, an overworked graduate student who suddenly starts receiving what she thinks are spam emails from the African country of Thesolo, claiming that she is, in fact, the future king’s betrothed. She writes these emails off as a nuisance, but Prince Thabiso and his assistant, Thabiso, are not joking about her destiny. When these emails go unnoticed, they both fly to New York to meet Nebi, but hijinks happen and Thabiso ends up impersonating a trust-fund kid from indiscriminate origins who quickly falls in serious love, and lust, with Nebi. But once Nebi knows the truth about her […]

Five Ways to Woo a Wolf With it being Valentine’s week in the U.S. and other parts of the world, here is some cuddly advice on how to woo a wolf. Note: Applies to humans as well! 1: Spend Extra Time with Her She-wolves like attention. It’s that simple! Example: In Wolf Hollow, Tabor bribes an elder to pair him up with Sasha so he can spend his entire day with her during patrol duty. 2: Present Her with a Tasty Morsel Nothing like a fresh kill to get a she-wolf’s heart pounding. Example: In Mating Games, Zackary leaves a dead rabbit for Elsie after she shares […]

Review: The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand

Review: The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand

The GingerSnap’s review I love chocolate. I love Paris. I read the first book in this series and didn’t hate it. That means I should’ve at least found this book tolerable, right? Wrong, friends, wrong. I hated this book so much that I had to bribe myself with banana bread to actually finish it (“You can only get another slice of banana bread if you get to 75% first”, I told myself). This book tells the story of Jamie (Jamie? Which is her real name? Unsure, since it switches in the book) Corey, who has come to Paris to recover from injuries sustained during her humanitarian work with fair trade cacao farmers, and Dominique Richard, one of Paris’ best chocolatiers and a perpetual grouch who takes an immediate liking to Jame/ie when she sits silently in his cafe for days in a row, sampling and savouring his confections. What makes […]

Excerpt: Love Over Lattes by Diana A. Hicks

How’s everyone’s Sunday going? On this day of rest, get your drink of choice and enjoy an excerpt from Love Over Lattes by Diana A. Hicks! Stick around to the end for the chance to win a signed book and goodie bag (US) or a digital copy of the book (international)! About the book Excerpt The path next to the pool ushered us by the grand staircase and down more steps toward a courtyard. Tucked in the corner was the cottage. I hugged my belly to keep myself from squealing or jumping up and down. It was perfect. And too good to be true. “Why are you doing this?” I asked. “I need to rent the place, and you need a place to stay. I’m doing it for the money.” “Because you obviously need more of that.” “Everyone needs more money. That’s what money does.” He dug his hand in his back […]

Review: Seared by Suleikha Snyder

The Faerie Queen’s review I DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS GOING TO BE A BDSM STORY. Ok, now that that’s out there, I can breathe again. I don’t mind BDSM stories, and I’ve enjoyed several in the past, but it would have been nice to know it was one going in. But honestly, that was torture, and not of a good kind. It started out ok, if a bit more on the erotica-sans-plot side. Then a plot was introduced, but I never cared. Because I couldn’t bring myself to care about the characters. Fine, I cared enough to force myself to the finish line, but only because the book is like 150 pages long. And yet it took a lot of willpower to read one page after the next. But I got there, and I can say with 100% certainty that this book and I were not meant for each other. […]

Excerpt: For the Sake of His Heir by Joanne Rock

Today seems like a good day for a snowball fight, and we’ve got just that thanks to this excerpt from For the Sake of His Heir by Joanne Rock! First, here’s a bit more about the book, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway at the end! About the book Excerpt Brianne was busy scooping up another snowball, scraping red gloves through the foot of accumulation on the wooden deck. She’d traded her wool cape for a red down parka and boots. A gray knit cap was pulled low over her eyes, her ponytail covered with snow and hanging bedraggled over one shoulder. His loafers would be ruined, but he had no intention of leaving the aggression unanswered, especially after he’d heard that laughter of hers. Had she moved on from their earlier disagreement? Or simply found an outlet for her frustration with him? He’d thought dinner would smooth things over between them, […]

Review & Excerpt: The Bastard’s Bargain by Katee Robert

Review & Excerpt: The Bastard’s Bargain by Katee Robert

The Faerie Queen’s review This is the sixth book in The O’Malleys series, but the first I’ve read. That maaaay have been a mistake. I thought it might be like other romance series, where there are references to some previous characters and events, but the story itself is contained for the most part. Nope. You are better off reading this as part of a series, as I learned when I was completely confused for the first chapter or two. Even once I’d gotten into this story, there were references to other characters and previous events that kept me from fully enjoying the narrative. That being said, I did actually enjoy this! This is one for those of you who like organised crime families, darkness, and power plays. The relationship between Dmitri and Keira can be very aptly described as love-hate, with all that anger and attempts to control each other infused […]

Review: A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

Review: A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

The GingerSnap’s review I tried. I really tried. I tried to read this whole book, but 40% in, I had to DNF. The reasons? There are so many. Number one: The entire time I was reading this book, I felt like I was missing some piece of the puzzle. This book is the first in the “Difficult Dukes” series, but there are so many off-handed references or hints to things the Dukes had said or done previously that I felt left out like I wasn’t privy to some aspects of the characters’ lives, which made it hard to really get into the story. Number two: The heroine, Olympia, is described in the book synopsis as “bookish, bespectacled”, which is problematic in and of itself because this description is used to contrast the gorgeousness of her soon-to-be husband, which is so not feminist, and we all know that being bookish and […]

Review & Excerpt: Trouble With Gold by Melinda Dozier

Review & Excerpt: Trouble With Gold by Melinda Dozier

The Faerie Queen’s review This is going to be a short review because the book was a short novella! Trouble With Gold was cute and fun, getting me in the mood for the Winter Olympics (opening in 3 weeks!), but it was not without its faults. Occurring over the space of the games, Nadia accidentally stumbles across snowboarder Ty, handcuffed in only his boxers and boots as part of an initiation. He immediately drawn to her, especially since she is so in control. It was pretty stereotypical in this regard: Ty is American and therefore fun-loving and a little reckless, while Nadia is an uptight Swiss with a desire to achieve and always be on time. Over the next few weeks, Nadia experiences a war between heart and head. Being a novella, it was really short, and I feel like it was unnecessarily so. A novella is no excuse to skimp on character […]
