Review: Alienated by Melissa Landers

Review: Alienated by Melissa Landers

Quick review Alienated was a joy to read, which is why it was read in a day. It centres around the relationship between a nerdy, redhead human girl and a serious, intelligent, sexy alien guy… and Earth’s desire to send said alien guy packing. While not tremendously deep or realistic (as realistic as alien sci-fi can get), Alienated was so very sweet and actually quite exciting at times. Landers also achieves something quite incredible: writing a spicy couple of scenes while keeping both characters (mostly) clothed and virgins. Yet, underneath all the sugar, you’ll taste the bitterness of prejudice, pulling these […]

Review: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

Review: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

Quick review Finding Audrey was like cuddling up in bed with a warm blanket. Kinsella stepped away from shopping and addressed a difficult issue with this book, and she did it in such a relatable way. The first person narrative put the reader into the shoes of a teenager with anxiety and showing that a mental illness does not strip away a person’s sense of humour and personality. The characters were all lovable, even the mom, and I laughed so hard in parts because I could see my family in Audrey’s. I read this book in a day, spurred on by the warm and fuzzies, and […]

Review: The Corridor by A.N. Willis

Review: The Corridor by A.N. Willis

Quick review The Corridor is a fun foray into multidimensional science fiction. While it started out a little confusing, once I got into the swing of things, I genuinely wanted to read more. The characters could have used a bit more development, but I still liked them, and I’m looking forward to reading about them again in book two. I would recommend this quick read to fans of YA and sci-fi, and who secretly wish for superpowers like mind control and multidimensional travel. Not so quick review Once again, this blog has led me to read something ever so slightly outside […]

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Quick review Shatter Me is about a girl with supernatural abilities in a dystopian world. Juliette can inflict pain through touch, and she is hated for this, so much so that she is locked up by her own parents and left to wither away in an asylum, unloved and untouched. But not for long. With her poetical style of writing that ties into Juliette’s psychological state, Mafi thrusts you into the mind of a girl who is feared, hated (and loved) for her abilities. Throughout the course of the book, Juliette must figure out who to trust, who (and what) […]

Review: Amber Smoke by Kristin Cast

Review: Amber Smoke by Kristin Cast

Quick review Amber Smoke is a great start to a guilty pleasure New Adult series. It combines Greek mythology with crime, swapping focus between Alek (Mr. Hotstuff Immortal Greek Warrior), Eva and a pair of cops trying to solve the mystery of a dead girl. In true NA form, there is a hint of steaminess, though not too much or too explicit. The focus is more on everyone running to or away from each other. It is a relatively quick read and sets the series up for more monsters to come. Read this if you: a) enjoy crime shows like […]

Review: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Review: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Quick review Rowell manages to capture the uncertainties and overwhelming nature of young love in this novel starring Eleanor and Park (bet you didn’t guess that!). The constantly switching points of view draw you in and let you fully experience the romance. She brings to life various social issues that many people have to deal with and aren’t often included in novels, especially all at once (even though they represent the reality for many), such as poverty, domestic abuse and racism. Rowell proves herself a mastermind at writing deep, complex and unique teenage characters that you will feel like you […]

Review: Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Review: Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Quick review Engaging from the very beginning, I was carried along by the beautiful writing, lovable characters (especially the Dragon! <3) and the twisting and turning dark mystery of the Wood. I found myself just barely breathing for pages on end, so enthralled and thirsty for the story was I. Where some authors might try to get away with one or two battles, Novik builds greater and greater challenges for the characters to overcome. She manages to keep the truth of the Wood a mystery until the very end, and what an incredible truth it is! At the end, I […]
