#AudiobookReview: PARTIALS by Dan Wells

In a sentence A great early performance by my favourite audiobook narrator, Partials indulged my bio geek side while still delivering an interesting and philosophical dystopian. I’m not going to lie. I went into this mostly because I wanted to confirm my belief that Julia Whelan is a fantastic narrator. And it was confirmed. Julia brought to life Kira and the gang, so much so that I upped my rating from 3.5 to 4 stars. (This isn’t the first time this has happened.) She’s so good at giving each character a voice and accent without going overboard, and the way she […]

Audiobook Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Audiobook Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Warning: light spoilers ahead if you haven’t read the first book, Clockwork Angel. Read my review here if that’s the case! In this second book in The Infernal Devices trilogy, the residents of the Institute are challenged to hunt down the Magister, who managed to escape at the end of Clockwork Angel. If they can’t, they’ll need to hand the reins over to Benedict Lightwood, with uncertain consequences. In their hunt, Tess, Jem and Will discover more about themselves and their pasts, with surprising connections popping up. To top it all off, the trio must also figure out their own […]

Bringing Life to ‘Until the End of the World’: An Interview with Narrator Julia Whelan

Bringing Life to ‘Until the End of the World’: An Interview with Narrator Julia Whelan

This past month, I finished listening to the Until the End of the World series by Sarah Lyons Fleming. Comprised of three novels and a novella, this series combines zombie apocalypse with family and romance and simply survival. It had heart-stopping action, gory slayage, laugh-out-loud dialogue, a cast of characters that wormed their way into your heart and a lot of practical advice for when the zombie apocalypse comes about. Top tip: learn how to grow vegetables. But most of all, Fleming had the power to absolutely tear you apart. I mean, it does have zombies. People are going to die. And you are going […]

Audiobook Review: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Audiobook Review: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

The first in The Infernal Devices trilogy, Clockwork Angel introduces a new set of characters to follow in the Shadowhunter world. Tess, Will and Jem, along with a host of secondary and tertiary characters, are in many ways reminiscent of the characters from The Mortal Instruments, but they made a refreshing change. Clare continues with her tendency to inject everyone with angst and woe-is-me, but not so much as to overpower the story. This time set in Victorian England, Tess and the Shadowhunters must figure out who is behind her kidnapping and the mysterious clockwork people, not knowing that the people […]

(Partly Audiobook) Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

(Partly Audiobook) Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

This is not chick-lit. This isn’t fluffy contemporary. This is an incredibly important book on an incredibly important topic. Moyes has crafted a moving story about two people from different worlds who have to spend a lot of time together. I started out listening to the audiobook version and then was so swept up in the story that I needed to buy the Kindle version just so I could read it faster. Will, Lou and all the other characters were so incredibly well-written that I had a hard time letting go at the end. (It’s a good thing the sequel came out […]

Audiobook Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Audiobook Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Quick review This was a disappointing turn after the first three books. More filler than plot, and the angst levels rose to national emergency levels. I’m now torn about whether to continue the series. Not so quick review I debated long and hard before writing this review, and even more while writing. I’ve heard the stories of hardcore fans going after anyone who had a less than stellar opinion of a book, and I didn’t want to attract ire. However, what kind of book reviewer would I be if I didn’t post the not-so-fabulous along with the fabulous reviews? For a […]
