I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance."

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

The GingerSnap’s review

Other than Juliet Stevenson’s narrated versions of Jane Austen classics, this book is hands-down the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. The sex scenes, the insecure hero, the massages – I loved it all!!

The hero of this book, Lance, is a crazy-hot redheaded Scottish hockey player living in Chicago. Lance had a tragic childhood* that’s made it difficult for him to engage in meaningful relationships, in part because he can’t stand being touched. But when he meets massage therapist Poppy, he melts under her hands. He feels instantly comfortable in her presence, something he’s never before experienced with anyone else.

Poppy and Lance have actually met before, over a decade ago when they were just teenagers. Lance was Poppy’s first kiss, and though she’s had her fair share of boyfriends, she’s still always hoped she would reconnect with the gorgeous Scottish boy she met at 13. When they actually do reconnect a year before this book is set, though, the meeting is anything but fairytale material.

Their love story is further complicated by Lance’s vindictive ex-hookup, Tash, who seriously messes with his head. I love that Lance’s narration really goes into just how Tash affected his insecurity and his ability to engage with other women. I got to know his character and Poppy’s so well, and that was a huge part of what made me listen to this ENTIRE AUDIOBOOK in 24 hours.

An insecure, sensitive hero was also not what I was expecting when I picked up a hockey romance, but that just goes to show that you can’t just a book by its sub-genre. Lance is unguarded and vulnerable with Poppy, and she reassures him with loving kindness. I’d even go so far as to dub Lance a beta hero.

Probably my favourite part of the book was the way Lance worships Poppy’s body. At one point, Poppy notes that she’s not in nearly as good shape as Lance, and he says, “Fuck the gym. I’ll be your workout.” SWOON. He also tells her that he wants to “work to deserve your body”. DOUBLE SWOON.

Also, the sex scenes in this book made me want to fan myself. Even the makeout scenes were luscious.

I also love that Lance’s female friends envelop Poppy into their group of female friendship awesomeness. This is one of my favourite aspects of romance- the friendship I get to witness between the characters, and I loved hearing the conversations Poppy had with Violet, Sunshine and Lily. They’re all so supportive of each other.

Clear your schedule and binge read this book. IT IS SO GOOD.

TW: There’s a few mentions of the physical abuse that Lance suffered as a child. There are no graphic details, but it’s important to note if you think this might upset you.

I would recommend this book to…

Lovers of hockey, sensitive Scottish men, redheaded heroes and heroines, crazy-hot sex scenes
